Kenya-News februar 2023

The last 6 months of 2022 were characterized by schools settling to normalization of the school calender after the Covid pandemic.  There were added school terms  and short school breaks in an effort to help children catch up with the school syllabus that had been missed when schools had been closed due to the Covid pandemic.

The longest holiday was during the December holiday,  it was also the period when drought was at its peak and had affected the Pastoralists hard among them the Maasai. The Støtteforening was sympathetic to the  the girls’s situation and allowed Management to put together an assortment of foods for each girl and this took place on the 12th December. We grouped ourselves and distributed the food from 3 different places.  Appreciation from the parents was overwhelming. We extend the appreciation to you.

Two of the girls completed their courses in December 2022: Teresia is now a qualified Beauty Therapist and and has a job. Semperuan has passed her certificate exams for Food and Beverage and is waiting to continue for the Diploma course for the same in May 2023. In the meantime, she has a temporary job making Maasai ornaments for sale so she can support herself.

Saoi did very well during her 3 months internship and is now back in College doing Diploma Module 2 in Community Development and Social Services.

Janet is in her 3rd year at the  University and is currently doing her last year’s 3 months Internship.

Nempiris has transited to Junior Secondary School which is the new School System.

Unfortunately 3 girls dropped out because of pregnancy at the beginning of this year. Another completed Secondary School. We lost contact.

Thanks to Merkurfonden, a five day Seminar was held in January.  The seminar report has already been forwarded to Bestyrelsen.

Thank you very much from the Management for your continued financial support which has enabled 40 girls go through the education system in the last 11 years. All the remaining 15 girls are doing well and are focused in their studies.

We wish you all well and continued friendship / partnership for the girls sake.

Best Regards

Silole

Kenya-News december 2021

We from Nenkashe Kenya send you warm greetings.

We felt sorry for you that you had had to cancel the fundraising event after putting in so much effort of involving friends, family and well-wishers, collecting items for sale etc. It has been an unpredictable year in many ways.

The school calendar has been chaotic in Kenya where we sometime ask each other which classes are home, which in school and when they are expected to resume and when exams are due. This December is a good example, normally, all pupils and students would have done end of year exams and would be home for Christmas. NOT this year. Only class 4 have had exams. Class 8 and Form 4 will sit for exams in March 2022 which will be the majority of our children. Therefore uncertain when they are expected to join the next step of education. At least the ongoing University students’ calendar has become regular and transition from one level to another has been smooth.

The long absences from school owing to the pandemic especially in 2021 has had adverse effect on the Nenkashe girls. There has been 3 drops out in one year.

Currently we have 22girls and 3 boys.

The girls are: 5 girls in Primary School, 8 girls in Secondary School, 4 in Vocational Schools, 2 in Colleges and 3 in different Universities.

The Nenkashe Management has long recognized the need for holding seminars which had to be postponed during the high pandemic period and the regulation that came with it but also by the chaotic school calendar.

Out of a 10 days Christmas school break, we managed to hold a 3 day Seminar.

The get together was an emotional and happy reunion for both the girls and the mentors. Unfortunately, not all the girls were able to attend.

It was wonderful to see and talk to the girls and to observe the changes in them. They have become mature young women.

Three of the girls had managed to get temporary jobs while waiting to join vocational schools. Semperuan who graduates in June 2022 as a Food Production Manager managed to get a job for 4 months in order to support her mother who looks after her baby. Commendable.

The Seminar was a great success. The loud cry was that of more frequent seminars which we hope will be possible to hold one in March.

The Kenyan Nenkashe sends warm greetings to the Management, Members and friends of Nenkashe in your continuing support of the Maasai girls.

We sympathize with you for the challenges you have had to go through due to the Covid pandemic.

Please see the attached Seminar Report.

We wish you all a good year..

Kenya-News juli 2021

The 2nd food distribution took place in September 2020. It took four days to shop, pack the foods in individual bags and visit 31 children. We travelled 761 km.

Each family and their child was interviewed about the many months of having the children at home: The reunion was wonderful.

Most of the children expressed that they are lonely-miss their friends in school, miss teachers’ guidance,

All the children were worried about their future, how they will catch up and those awaiting exams were extra worried of the uncertain future. Most of them cannot access the online lessons as they have no electricity, no, network, no TV, no radio. Difficult to concentrate because of noise, and cannot study at night for lack of light. Parents have found it challenging to provide food and necessary needs for the many months but have continued to encourage the children to study even under those non conducive circumstances.

Achievements

Thanks to you food was distributed to 16 of the more needy families in June.

In September, all the children were visited in their homes, food was distributed above all we saw the children and heard their story. 31 children were visited.

A few of the girls communicate with each other, supporting each other through SMS.

Janet (Nairobi University-Geology) and Semperuan (Kabete Technical College-Food Science Production) have had to move from home and live with distant relatives in order to access the internet and Nenkashe has bought bundles for them. They have managed to follow lectures online and even sit for exams.

Janet spends a few hours in the shop of the relative she is staying with in between lectures Janet is physically challenged (see picture).

Eight (8) of the children have gone back to school, all candidates for exams.  Malel in Class 8, the rest in Form four (4).

Challenges

All school children have had a tough year uncertain about when and if schools will open this year. The State issuing conflicting reports. Worried about their coming exams, worried about the lost year and how they make up for the lost year.

The Annual Seminar did not take place due to the Covid19.

One of the Form 2 girls have gotten pregnant. (4000 school girls in Kenya have gotten pregnant in Kenya-the known ones during the lockdown) The girl’s grandfather would like her to continue with her education. She is an orphan and finding a person to look after the baby might be a challenge.

The Way Forward

The Ministry of Education has finally issued next year’s school calendar. The 1st term starts on the 4th January.
